Biashara Grant

There's a particular kind of poverty that isn't about ambition. It's about access. A good idea, a willing pair of hands and still nowhere to find the small amount of capital needed to actually begin.

The Mugie Biashara Grant exists to close that gap. Part of Mugie's wider Grassroots Fund, it provides seed funding to help local communities turn sustainable livelihood ideas into working, income-generating businesses. Strengthening the local economy one small enterprise at a time and with it, the quality of life for the families behind them. It's one piece of a much larger commitment: across the 2025/26 financial year alone, Mugie invested KES 13.57 million directly into community wellbeing and support.

Right now, the grant supports two of Mugie's flagship community programmes: poultry and beekeeping projects — each one already proof of what a modest injection of funding, paired with the right support, can grow into.

The process is built to be fair rather than fast. A group first submits a proposal and meets with the Mugie team to talk it through, before the proposal goes to review. If approved, funding (capped at 150,000 KSH per project) is paid out in instalments as the project hits its agreed milestones, rather than as a single lump sum. It keeps everyone accountable to the same goal and it means support grows alongside the project itself, not ahead of it.

Applications open on a rotational basis across Mugie's community zones, with two projects supported each year. Because timing varies by area, the best way to find out when your zone's window is open is to get in touch directly with the Mugie Community Office. Eligible applicants need to belong to a registered self-help group operating within one of Mugie's community zones.

It's a small grant with a large intention: that opportunity shouldn't be limited to those who already have the means to start.
