Sitting at the crossroads of the Rift Valley, the Laikipia Plateau and Northern Kenya’s drylands is Mugie Conservancy.

A place shaped by those who believe that wildlife, land and communities can thrive together.

We started as a cattle ranch. We became a conservancy with a vision for a landscape where wildlife and agriculture could not only co-exist, but thrive. A place where livestock and lions could belong to the same story, not opposite sides of a fence.

It became a mission of working hand in hand with communities, government and partners, because an ecosystem this size never survives alone. A handful of values simple enough to return to on the hardest days: grow together, understand what you're protecting, keep the balance, respect one another, measure what matters, use the land wisely and never stop talking to the world beyond the boundary.

That vision is still the one we're building toward today.

But an idea is only ever the beginning. The real work is in the doing.

So the fences came down where they needed to and grazing plans went up where they mattered. Ultra-high-density grazing, managed the regenerative way letting grass recover and rebuilding the soil's ability to hold water, nutrients, and carbon.

Corridors were opened so elephants and giraffes could cross freely between Mugie and beyond. Endangered species found safe ground here painstakingly protected as their numbers began slowly to climb.

But none of it works without people. So rangers were trained: on foot, on horseback, alongside bloodhounds that can follow a scent for days across dozens of kilometres. Herders, mechanics, cooks, guides and teachers became the quiet backbone of the whole operation.

Piece by piece, that's how a dream becomes a place you can actually stand in.

But a conservancy is never finished. It's always becoming, evolving as life does.

Today, Mugie is home to 52+ mammal species and more than 300 kinds of birds. Lions, leopards, cheetah, reticulated giraffe, Grévy’s zebra, Jackson Hartebeest, Besia Oryx and herds of elephant moving through at their own unhurried pace. It's a living corridor between the Rift Valley and the Laikipia Plateau, a stretch of ground that keeps this whole landscape connected rather than cut into pieces.

We're growing what conservation can prove: that it can be financially self-sustaining, that grazing and biodiversity can coexist and that Kenya's wildlife heritage can benefit those who protect it.

At Mugie, the answer keeps growing too. One season, one sunrise, one small act of care at a time.

Every guest who visits Mugie Conservancy is, quietly, funding a ranger's salary, a bloodhound's training, Mugie’s clinic and a child's place at Mugie school. Every partner, donor and neighbour who lends time, funding or expertise is adding another hand to a project too big for any one of us to carry alone.
